Each month, our three Captains share with us their news from the previous few weeks and take a quick look ahead to the upcoming month.

Men’s Captain, Norman Davidson

With all team competitions now finished for 2024, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the Team Captains who worked so hard throughout the year and all of those players who took part.

I thoroughly enjoyed attending the matches both home and away and experiencing the camaraderie that exists within the teams, let’s hope for more success next year.

We can now concentrate on August’s competitions, starting with a full field of players for the Copella Cup. Then it is round 6 of the Laird. Leading at present by five points on 111 is Paul Ketley just ahead of Chris Perrin on 106. Good luck to everybody.

The Monthly Medal and Westwood Putter takes place on Sunday 18th, with the final round of the Laird taking place on Saturday August 31.

Last month we said goodbye to Becky Daniels and wished her well in her new role at the Colchester Institute. Becky has always been there to support the members, committees and especially myself, be it organising event meals, or supporting my charity and promoting ticket sales for various social events. I will miss Becky and would like to thank her for everything she has done for the club.

Ladies Captain, Stella Hammond

So with August here it seems that summer has finally arrived, it is a quiet month for the Ladies with the just the Chris Mylam trophy on August 8 being contested alongside the usual Thursday and weekend competitions

A brief look back at last month, Ladies Captain’s Day was a fantastic, colourful affair with a rainbow theme, once again the ladies were very generous with the raffle raising £350

The run of the teams in various competitions came to an end, but the players, caddies and supporters can be proud of the way in which they participated with everyone giving their best, we look forward to competing again next year

Looking further forward, details of the Captains, Dinner are out, Saturday October 5, and I hope that many of you will come along to enjoy a three course meal and evening dance and celebrate with myself and the other Captains.

Finally, I want to wish good luck to Elaine Harris when she competes in the National Finals of the Race to Woodhall Spa on August 14.

Joke of the month – from my new book – “ A ball will always travel farthest when hit in the wrong direction” – Unknown

Quote of the month – “ They say golf is like life, but don’t believe them. Golf is more complicated than that” – Gardener Dickinson

Seniors Captain, John Parkinson

Our golf courses are currently in the best condition they have been in for a long time. The weather has been perfect for grass growth – wet, sunny, and warm. I hope you are enjoying your golf on both courses and that you’re ensuring you have submitted a minimum of 12 cards to maintain an active handicap.

I would like to thank all those who took part in my Charity day. Together, we managed to raise over £5,000 for my chosen charity, Parkinson’s UK, which is a fantastic result. The weather was great, and there was a good buzz in the sports bar before play, during lunch, and at the auction. Congratulations to all the winners.

  • Here are the events to look forward to in August:
    • Interclub matches away against Benton Hall and Ipswich, and at home against Felixstowe, Clacton, Frinton, and Haverhill.
    • Monthly Stableford on August 5
    • Seniors Medal Cup and Bell on August 14
    • Committee Cup will be held at Bentley on August 19.

I hope you have noticed that our August Stableford will be played as three balls, instead of four balls as we have done previously. We believe this change will speed up play and benefit all participants.

Quote for this month: “Golf?! You hit down to make the ball go up. You swing left, and the ball goes right. The lowest score wins. And, on top of that, the winner buys the drinks.”
