Each month, our three Captains will share with us their news from the previous few weeks and a quick look ahead to the upcoming month.
But before you read what they have to say this month, a quick reminder about our first ever Bingo Night at SbN on Friday April 5. We already have something approaching 130 people signed up for the night, but we have room for plenty more in the Devora Suite. Tickets cost just £10 each and you can book by letting either Harry Hibbert or Becky Daniels know. Why not give it a go, bring along friends and family for what is sure to be a fun night.

Men’s Captain, Norman Davidson

Very limited golf was possible during February as a result of the weather and subsequent extended course closure. However, looking ahead we are hoping for a full programme, starting with the Spring Foursomes on Saturday 16 and the St Patrick’s Day competition the following day, Sunday17.

The St Patricks Day competition is always a fun filled event and I encourage as many of you as possible to sign up. There will be beverages (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) available at the halfway hut and an Irish Stew available to purchase in the sports bar afterwards, where you will be entertained, or maybe mystified, by a roving magician.

Later in the month we see the start of the Laird on Saturday March 23. For those newer members, not familiar with the Laird, this is an 18-hole Stableford, played over seven rounds, alternating between courses, off the white tees. The winner is the competitor with the highest aggregate score from their best three rounds. Further information can be found on ClubV1 under the competition manuals.

The Club Team competitions also begin this month with the Jubilee Cup team playing away at Nazeing on March 24. We wish all of our teams the very best of luck throughout the year.

Finally, the Standard trophy will take place on Good Friday, March 29.

So, let’s hope the weather is kind to us and we can finally start to enjoy our golf.

Ladies Captain, Stella Hammond

Well, not a great deal of golf has been played, with the weather continuing to cause havoc!

However, we did manage to have a fantastic ladies charity day. The sun came out and lots of cake was eaten……and over £300 was raised for Little Lifts. Big thank you to everyone.

Looking forward to this month, as Norman says above, we have the St Patrick’s day competition on the 17th with Irish stew available from the sports bar after playing and a magician entertaining too. So even if you don’t play, come along to enjoy the food and atmosphere.

We resume 18-hole competitions on March 7 with a Stableford….and Easter comes early this year on Thursday March 28, when we will play an 18 hole waltz competition, during which chocolate will be featuring I’m sure.

In readiness for the Team competitions starting in April, the Silver, the Bronze and the Harris Bowl, a coaching session has been organised by Lesley Garnett with the James Andrews Golf school. This is an exciting opportunity for team captains, players and caddies.

Golf quote for the month “ Every day’s a clean slate. You don’t know what’s going to happen, you don’t know what you’re going to shoot, and the best you can do is go in with a good attitude and try your best “ – Nelly Korda, LPGA Tour.

Seniors Captain, John Parkinson

Well, what can I say that you haven’t already heard about one of the wettest Februarys on record?

Long-standing members will confirm they have never known both courses to be closed for so long. But rightly so, as we need to protect the courses from damage. Let’s hope March brings us a sustained spell of no rain with sunshine and wind to dry the ground out.

Coming up in March we have the first ever Mike Moore Memorial scramble on March 6 with a good field of at least 56 players. I hope you have an enjoyable day and take a moment to remember our good friend and fellow golfer Mike Moore who is much missed.

We also have a Stableford on March 13 – which if it goes ahead will be our first of the year, with January and February being cancelled because of the weather.

Our interclub season starts away to Stowmarket on March 12, followed by home matches against Newton Green, Colchester and the Warren. Please put your name down if you wish to play in these matches. Entry is via Club V1 under Club, Club teams, seniors inter club. For home matches, lunch will be a carvery for £20 which includes £1 tip to the bar staff. Thanks to Pete Hele who does the hard work organising these matches for us.
