Each month, our three Captains – Matt Tunstall, Jill Pottle and Kevin Price – share with us their news from the previous few weeks and take a quick look ahead to the upcoming month.
Men’s Captain, Matt Tunstall
HI All,
I hope you’ve all had a pleasant month on and off the course. We’re all starting to notice more and more daylight both in the morning and evening which means spring is on the way!
Despite a rotten forecast, the team get together had a good turnout with 27 people showing up to meet the captains. It turned out to be a very pleasant and mild day. It was great to see some fresh faces interested in taking part in this year’s teams so thank you all for coming along.
March brings along a club favourite, St Patrick’s day. As I’m writing this, there are currently only three tee times left which is great to see! Clare Nixon has kindly arranged for an Irish stew to be available after the golf for any of those wishing to stay and either celebrate their good golf or drown their sorrows over a pint or two of Guinness.
Lastly, I’m deeply saddened to announce the passing of a dear friend of the club, Alan White. Big Al was a beloved member of the JP swindle who’s laugh could be heard on opposite corners of the golf course. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Vivienne, daughter, Jenna and son, Ian.
Ladies Captain, Jill Pottle
Hello Everyone,
It finally feels like Spring is here and I hope that you are all, just like me, looking forward to some lighter mornings and evenings and some warmer weather to enable you to fit more golf into your busy schedules.
The Ladies Section begin their 18-hole competitions at the beginning of March and I’m sure that, for some of us, the back 9s and those Constable hills will seem longer than ever until we get used to playing them again.
We have a few competitions lined up for March but, as Easter is late this year, nothing special is planned in our diary.
Our team captains are busy preparing for the County Matches that begin in earnest in April. Teams are currently being selected and our new team kit is on order which we are looking forward to wearing when we play.
There are still some tee times available for the St Patrick’s Day competition on Saturday March 15 with a shotgun start at 8.30am. We would like everyone playing to stay afterwards and enjoy the special on offer in the Sports Bar of Irish Stew (with an optional pint of Guinness). This is always a fun day, so make sure you don’t miss out!
I look forward to seeing you all either around the Clubhouse or out on the course.
Seniors Captain, Kevin Price
I’m currently having a short sabbatical from golf on a one week break in North Norfolk, but it may be closer to two weeks by the time I play again.
On the one hand, it might be a good thing as I feel we can get a bit over-golfed and the mind can get overloaded, but on the other hand, I’ve just embarked upon a series of lessons and I’m really keen to get out there and practice to try and reap the benefits.
Why is it that what we learn during a lesson is so difficult to put into practice out on the course? I’m staying within eyeshot of Royal West Norfolk GC, (Brancaster) and do wonder if I should have put a few clubs in the car. At least when I get back, the range will have opened again, albeit looking somewhat different!
We held our 3 Clubs and a Putter competition in February. It’s always interesting to see what clubs people selected and their logic behind it. All things considered, the scores weren’t too bad, with the winner scoring 35 points. Some players ended up scoring better than normal; does that mean too many clubs in the bag is not necessarily a good thing?
In March, we are looking forward to remembering one of our old friends, with the second Mike Moore Scramble due to take place.
We are also starting our InterClub matches – the first an away trip to Stowmarket. It’s always nice to win these matches, and particularly those played away from home. All in all, we play 30 matches and there is always a desire to end the year with a better record than your predecessor as Seniors Captain.
Enjoy March, we should be one step closer to summer clothing making a reappearance!
