Each month, our three Captains – Matt Tunstall, Jill Pottle and Kevin Price – share with us their news from the previous few weeks and take a quick look ahead to the upcoming month.

Men’s Captain, Matt Tunstall

I hope May has treated you all well. I didn’t think I’d be wishing for rain so soon this year, but we certainly needed some. Let’s just hope the good weather returns.

I’d just like to thank everyone for the fantastic support in recent competitions, the turnouts have been excellent.

This weekend brings one of the biggest events of the year with the captain’s charity day. As you may know the charity for the year is St Helena hospice which is an organisation that has helped many of us during difficult times. Your generosity on the day would be greatly appreciated and the donations will go a long way. We have some members of staff from the hospice coming along which will give you all an opportunity to learn more about the great work that they do.
We will also have some blind auctions for green fee vouchers going out on Friday so please look out for that.

June brings another busy calendar with Golf Week! For those of you that haven’t played any of the golf week events, I would certainly encourage you to do so. It’s a week based purely on the less serious and competitive side of our beloved sport. And of course, it all kicks off with our Summer Party on Saturday June 21, make sure you get your tickets soon!

Take care all and have a great Month.

Ladies Captain, Jill Pottle

Hi Everyone,

Well, May has come and gone so quickly and I can’t believe I’m already halfway through my Captaincy!

I must start with a great big thank you to all of you that sponsored me in my ‘Walk 150 Miles’ challenge that I undertook during May to raise funds for my charity, Parkinson’s UK. I’m sure you will be pleased to hear that I smashed my challenge by completing 218 miles so far (and at the time of writing I still have another few days left to go…..)

I have so far raised a total of £500 which is a fantastic result and the Parkinson’s UK team will be extremely grateful to receive these funds to help support both existing sufferers and aid their research into, hopefully, finding a cure. I would appreciate if those of you that have pledged money could arrange for this to be paid as soon as possible. I should be around the clubhouse over the next couple of weeks (including weekends) so please come and catch me if I don’t catch you first!!

Our Ladies who have represented SbN as part of our County Teams are all doing very well so far and will all complete their initial league fixtures during June. Good Luck girls and I hope the success continues to take us onwards to the Quarter Finals.

Don’t forget to register for the various fun events that will be held during our Golf Week in June. Sign up for these competitions opens on Club V1 on 1st June. If anyone requires further details of the events please speak to Harry or either of the Captains.

This month also brings us the Summer Party which heralds the start of Golf Week on Saturday 21st June. Please contact Harry Hibbert on harry.hibbert@stokebynayland.com if you wish to purchase tickets. Flyers will be around the clubhouse over the next few days with more details.

Here’s hoping the lovely warm weather we were experiencing makes a welcome return during the next month for us to make the most of the longer days.

Thanks again to all our marvellous greenkeeping team for providing us with courses in such fabulous condition on which to enjoy our summer golf.

Seniors Captain, Kevin Price

The greenkeepers must have heaved a huge sigh of relief when the rain finally came. It hasn’t got in the way of golf too much, but has done wonders for the course, which is looking lush and green.

The Seniors held their Vice Captain’s tour in May, and what a great event it proved to be, superbly organised by this year’s VC, Graham Cork.

As is the tradition on the tour, the next VC was unveiled. For 2026, we welcome Kevin Walsh. Many congratulations to Kevin on his position.

For those of you looking for golfing venues for an overnight stay, or longer, I can thoroughly recommend Greetham Valley. Very fair and interesting courses, pleasant staff and food, and suitable accommodation. The only downside was the bar running out of beer, but I’m sure this doesn’t happen too often!

The event was won by none other than Lionel Hatch. For those of you that know him, Lionel proved to be a very popular winner!

During the early part of the year, I took the plunge and invested in a series of lessons with Simon Dainty. Most people would acknowledge that you don’t get instant gratification with lessons, as there is no quick fix. After having a very torrid March and early April, I’m suddenly starting to see some results. Although my handicap crept up earlier in the year, the combination of the lessons and the higher handicap has resulted in my recording some fairly decent scores the last month or so.

My message would be, a series of lessons is far better than just booking the one-off lesson when you have a problem. Don’t expect results straight away, but persevere, it will pay off in the end.

Have a great June.
