The Seniors section contested their annual Championship with two medal rounds over the last two weeks.
There were 38 players taking part in this competition off the white tees, with the first round on Gainsborough, followed by the second on Constable. After most of the players were in from round one, the handicap competition was closely packed with scores ranging from nett 68 to 72, that is, until Tony Carman came in with a dazzling nett 64. Tony was only one shot off the lead in the scratch competition, shooting 79, against Ian Mckay’s 78.
With only the top ten gross, top ten nett and those within 10 shots of the lead going through, Tony’s score took out a number of the field.
The scene was set for round two. Heavily sanded greens resulted in many struggling with the pace and leaving putts short.
Sadly for Tony Carman, he couldn’t reproduce his form of the previous week and promptly fell down the leaderboard. This left the field open for one of the chasing pack to come up with the goods.
That honour fell to Roger Fleuty who played a very steady round. His only blemish coming on the 10th hole, following a particularly nasty lie in the bunker. Any damage was short-lived though, as he parred the 11th and birdied 12. A combination of pars and bogeys followed to leave Roger signing for a nett 68 and top honours in the handicap competition.
In the scratch competition, Tony’s demise left the door wide open for Ian Mckay to capitalise, and he didn’t disappoint. Another steady round, playing one shot better than his handicap, left Ian with an 80 on the day and 158 over the two rounds. A late surge from Simon Oliphant, with a 77, fell 1 shot short with 159, coming after a disappointing 82 in round one.
Many congratulations to the winners who will be presented with their trophies at the Seniors Annual Meeting.
